The Monal, also known as the Himalayan Monal or Impeyan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus), is a strikingly beautiful pheasant species found in the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, including parts of India Uttarakhand, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet.
The Monal is renowned for its vibrant and iridescent plumage, featuring a colorful array of metallic green, blue, copper, and white feathers. The male Monal is particularly striking, with its impressive multicolored crest and long tail feathers. In contrast, the female is more subdued, with a mottled brown and white plumage.
The Monal is the state bird of Uttarakhand and holds cultural and symbolic significance in the region. Due to its stunning appearance, it is also referred to as the “Bird of Nine Colors” in some folklore.
These birds inhabit dense coniferous forests and alpine meadows at elevations ranging from 2,500 to 4,500 meters (8,200 to 14,800 feet). They are known for their shy and elusive nature, making them challenging to spot in the wild.
The Monal primarily feeds on seeds, berries, insects, and plant matter, and they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon.
